For those of you who have kids or for that matter a life that doesn’t revolve around watching television 24 hrs a day, one of greatest inventions to come along in the past 20 years has got to be the Digital Video Recorder. With the ability to fast forward, rewind, and pause programming as well as the added benefit of recording two things at once, DVR ranks right up there with the Internet, Caller-Id, Satellite radio, and of course WrapMail in that it has completely changed an entire medium. Gone are the days of having to sit through a half hour of commercials just to see “Who Shot JR?”, with the touch of a button it’s goodbye pesky ads and hello more time to do something else.
If you were one of millions tuning in to catch up on the latest adventures of The Family Guy which is running in syndication on TBS, you may have witnessed history in the making and quite possibly a major strike against DVR junkies. It was during Tuesday night’s episode that comedian Bill Engvall (star of the TBS sitcom The Bill Engvall show) walked across the bottom of the screen, held up a remote, and paused the animated program right in mid-sentence. What exactly was Engvall doing? Why of course he was there to promote his sitcom, but what he actually did was light a million bulbs in the minds of advertisers everywhere who have spent the last couple of years trying to find away around “fast forwarding to the good parts”.
Now I’m no genie, but rest assured that it doesn’t take a fortuneteller to see what’s coming next. Even as I type this post story boards all across the country are being filled up by the “Me-Too’s” looking to get their foot in the door and cash in before another way around unwanted ads is found. So enjoy your commercial free days while they last DVR devotees…life is about to change.
